An auxiliary meeting and supplies log book shows that Elizabeth Hanes (chair) appointed four committees: Cutting Committee, with Mrs. Glass on as chair; Surgical Dressings Committee, with Mrs. Wiley D. Forbus as chair; social, with Mrs. F. Bayard Carter as chair; and Book Collection Committee for Howland Ward, with Mrs. Everett as chair. The first meeting recorded on October 17, 1934 lists 27 participants, mostly names of wives of many of the first physicians and instructors at the Duke University School of Medicine: Hansen-Pruss, Davison, Alyea, Oosting, and Hanes. The first account of finished work lists the following items created or procured for the hospital: 28 dozen tonsil sponges, 35 dozen abdominal gauze [rolls], 39 dozen surgical sponges, 5 dozen dust cloths, 1 dozen compresses, 4 large towels, 27 small towels, and one infant gown. The auxiliary supported the staff of the Hospitals as many hospital professionals left to work overseas and continued to meet until 1947.
