Description
  • Hanes came to Duke University in 1931 as a member of the original faculty. He served as professor of neurology and as the Florence McAlister Professor of Medicine (1930-1946). He was chair of the Department of Medicine from 1933 to 1946. In 1937, Hanes proposed the creation of a Department of Internal Medicine fund. To create this fund, Hanes and other members of the department pooled all fees collected from private patients. The fund, later known as the Anna M. Hanes Research Fund, provided salaries for technicians and secretaries as well as instruments and supplies needed for teaching and research. The Hanes family contributed to or funded many other projects at Duke University, including the Elizabeth P. Hanes House (a dormitory for nursing students), a reading room for the School of Medicine's library, and the beginnings of the Sarah P. Duke Gardens on campus.
