Callaway married Catharine Dater Van Blarcom, an instructor of nursing at Duke University School of Nursing, on October 11, 1941 in the Duke Chapel. Callaway, a student member of Alpha Omega Alpha, graduated from the first class of the Duke University School of Medicine in 1932 at the age of 21. Following graduation, he trained in dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1933 he returned to Duke University as an intern and later as an assistant resident. In 1935, he pursued further dermatology training at the University of Alabama Medical School. In 1937, he came back to Duke University to develop a division of dermatology within the Department of Medicine. The division was formally established in 1939. Callaway, affectionately known as "Dr. Cal," served as its chief from 1939 to 1975. Callaway was closely connected to education and trained several student interns during their residency periods. The Callaway Club was formed by physicians who trained under Dr. Callaway and the J. Lamar Callaway Professor of Dermatology chair was created in his honor.
