  • Thelma Ingles came to Duke university in 1944 supported by a United States Public Health Service grant to study the role of the nurse in the clinic. She returned to Duke in 1949 as professor and chair of the Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing at Duke University. From 1949 to 1962, she provided leadership in establishing the national and international reputation of Duke's nursing educational programs. In 1958, Ingles developed the clinical nursing specialist program, the first master's program of its kind in the United States.
