Description
  • Rand Stereotactic Instrument for Yttrium Hypophysectomy. Los Angeles: Trent H. Wells of the Mechanical Development Co., 1953. This instrument was used to implant yttrium 90 oxide into the pituitary gland. Probes were introduced by way of the nasal cavity through the floor of the sinus and into the pituitary gland. As a result, the pituitary was destroyed by radioactivity with the sparing of nearby brain structures. It was also employed to treat acromegaly and to treat pain associated with metastatic breast cancer in women. Built by Trent H. Wells of the Mechanical Development Company in Los Angeles, CA.
