Leitz compound monocular microscope

Item Description

Description
  • Leitz compound monocular microscope. 19th Century. Signed: E. Leitz, Wetzlar, No. 50835 of 11/VIII. Filiale, New York, 1899. Brass with black enamel base. Wooden case and accessories (oculars, additional low power objective and microscope slides). Initials "CAA" on inside of door to case. Ernst Leitz became a partner in an optics firm founded by Carl Kellner in Wetzlar, Germany. When he assumed sole management in 1869, he renamed the business after himself. Along with Zeiss, his firm became one of Germany's leading manufacturers of compound microscopes in the 19th century. An enlightened employer, Leitz introduced health insurance, pension, and housing schemes as well as an 8 hour day. Records of the microscopes manufactured exist for both Leitz and Zeiss. Each instrument had a serial number and was registered in a ledger.
