Description
  • Correspondence between Eugene A. Stead, Jr. and Karl E. Krill, Dean, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI in November and December 1970 describing an objective method of comparing the diagnostic capabilities of non-physicians. Dean Krill provides a working paper titled "Medical Diagnosticians" for Dr. Stead's consideration and use if he deemed appropriate. The design of the study has 3-parts: (a) the training of group of BS-level graduates in biosciences to practice medical diagnosis of a limited character, (b) the testing of their performance against MD's in routine clinical settings and (c) the "rehabilitation" of the trainees via standard graduate programs should the experiment fail. Dr. Stead liked the idea and "knows that it will work." He does not think that a hospital outpatient clinic would be suitable site for evaluation. They didn't need a training program and could use PAs to test diagnostic hypothesis - however Dr. Stead does not want to create an independent practitioner making diagnosis without physician supervision and direction.
