Description
  • A 1971 progress report written by Dr. Malcolm Todd, Chairman of the AMA's Council on Health Manpower to "report the progress that has been made by our Council on Health Manpower in working closely with medical specialty societies in the development and implementation of a rational methodology for evaluating the need for and proper role of new health personnel to assist the physician." The Council developed a working definition of the physician's assistant, did not like the term "associate" and had produced guidelines for training orthopedic and urologic physician's assistants. The Council was working with the American Society of Internal Medicine, American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of physicians jointly to develop guidelines for assistants to primary care physicians.
