- Dr. Joseph and Dorothy Beard seated at micrscope, examining slides. Joseph W. Beard was professor of surgery from 1937 to 1973. In 1946 Beard became the James B. Duke professor of surgery and was appointed professor of virology in 1965. Dorothy Beard was a research associate in the Department of Surgery. She worked alongside her husband as part of the internationally prominent Beard cancer research team to help develop the first usable vaccine for equine encephalomyelitis.
