  • Operating room with ultraviolet light, x-ray screen, instrument table, and patient bed prepared for surgery. In 1936, Dr. J. Deryl Hart originated the use of ultraviolet radiation to control airborne infections in surgical operating rooms, a technique that became widely accepted across the country. This procedure dramatically reduced the number of infections and related deaths and won national acclaim in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
