  • Heart-lung machine with heat exchanger and experimental pieces, including left to right: two unidentified parts, Blood Filter, Mayo type Blood Filter, Blood Pressure Gauges, Brown Heat Exchanger, Kay-Cross type of Disc Blood Oxygenator An experimental heart lung machine built in the Duke Surgical Instrument Shop by Bill Barber. Dr. "Mac" Mauney, an assistant resident in Surgery, worked on modifications. The heat exchanger was designed and built for Dr. Ivan Brown by the Harrison Radiator division of General Motors. Later models of this device continued to be an essential part of all heart lung machines
