  • In the late 1920s, J. Deryl Hart invented a variable pressure bed (or air mattress) to ease patient’s bed sores. Hart patented many of his inventions, which also included a pneumatic bed, an operating room supply table, and a surgical basin with a stand for support. Hart was chair of the Dept. of Surgery from 1930 to 1960. He came to Duke University in 1929 to help establish Duke Hospital departments.
