- In his 27 February 1981 letter to William Stanhope, Dick Rensch reacts strongly to a recent memorandum sent by Mr. Stanhope to "all PAs" voicing his concerns about the NCCPA's "proposed mechanism for recertification of PA-0Cs." In the attached memorandum, Mr. Stanhope voices several minor concerns including delays in coming up with a recertification plan, the requirement that all PAs take the examination being proposed although it is for research purposes, and taking the entry-level examination as a first step to be - "extremely inefficient and overly costly." Stanhope's major concern is that any research methodology should be voluntary and not coercive - a "breach of [research] ethics." Rensch responds by saying "You [Stanhope] and yours have enraged organized medicine. We are suspect now, on everyone's list, and yes, Big Brother is watching." In closing, Rensch says that "I will stand behind my certifying commission at all costs."
