- In 1979, the American College of Surgeons (ACS) provided NCCPA $21,481 for the experimental administration and analysis of an examination designed to measure the proficiency of PAs and SAs in surgery. The experimental examination was administered to 450 surgical and primary care PAs during late 1979 and early 1980. This report provides details about the study that included 260 primary care PAs and 179 surgeon's assistants, and 11 unclassified PAs. No significant differences were found between the two groups taking the examination; those with broader experiences tended to do better on the exam; those with more years of experience in surgery (> 3yrs) did better than those with less experience.
