- This oral history interview was conducted with Dr. John A. Bartlett on January 29, 2024 by Anthony Zhao as part of the Bass Connections Agents of Change Oral History Project. During the interview, Bartlett explores his family's background in medicine in Rochester, New York; his family's involvement in the civil rights movement in Rochester; family values; societal changes in the 1960s; health disparities; coming to Duke in 1981 as a resident intern; the early years of the first public HIV/AIDS clinic at Duke; experiences with stigmatization in the community; clinical trials for AZT, the first available treatment for HIV/AIDS; relationships with the LGBTQ+ community and sex worker community; Durham County Health Department volunteer work; meeting Julia Giner and Patricia Bartlett and developing relationships; political environment and activism during the Reagan presidency; and mentorship at Duke. The themes of this interview include community activism, health education, and patient-centered care.
