Description
  • This AMA feature appeared in the September 14, 1970 issue of JAMA and summarizes a recent speech made by Walter C. Bornemeier, MD, president of the AMA, stating importance of "establishing training facilities now for medical [physician's] assistants, and for their acceptance by the public and the medical profession as vital members of the medical team." Dr. Bornemeier describes the curriculum and impact of two PA programs, the Medex Program at the University of Washington and the PA Program at Duke University, on providing extended health care services. He notes that both programs rely heavily on former medics as recruits for training. He concludes his speech by stating that "The relatively simple concept of physician assistants, we of the AMA believe, will go a long way toward answering one of the major problems faced by this country."
