- A paper written in 1972 by Dr. D. Robert Howard at Duke University describes the role that PAs can play in remote areas if the "dependent" role of the PA to the physician is based on supervision and not on location. He argues that this mutually binding relationship should be "geographically irrelevant." In an effort to resolve local problems confronting the delivery of health care services to remote areas, "six physicians (or groups of physicians) have experimented with using seven graduates of the Duke Physician's Associate Program in geographically separate settings." These setting have the PAs located between four and eighty miles from the supervising physician(s). There is an attached article accompanying the paper and cover letter.
