- Mary Alverta Poston graduated from Duke University with a master's degree in 1939. She was a member of the original faculty as an instructor in bacteriology and later an associate in microbiology within the Dept. of Microbiology (1930-1961). She died in 1961. The Department of Microbiology was established in 1930. It was re-established as the Department of Microbiology when the Department of Immunology was established as an individual Department in 1992. The Department of Microbiology merged with the Department of Genetics to form the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology in 2002.
