- McGovern graduated from Duke University in 1945 (B.S. and M.D.). He served on the Duke Hospital house staff from 1948 to 1949. He received the Markle Award in 1950. The McGovern-Davison Children's Health Center at Duke University is named in honor of McGovern and his longtime mentor and friend, the late Dr. Wilburt Cornell Davison, pediatrician and first dean of Duke's School of Medicine. After his work at Duke, McGovern founded the renowned McGovern Allergy Clinic in Houston. Among many other accomplishments, McGovern as president of the American Osler Society.
