Description
  • Railroad tracks were placed for steam engine trains to bring building materials, including rocks from the nearby quarry, to the site of the future Duke University School of Medicine. The partially-constructed School of Medicine as well as some workers or trustees are visible to the left of the tracks. Construction of the building was completed in 1930. Hospital construction began on September 1, 1927 and was completed on July 1, 1930. Duke Hospital opened for patients on July 21, 1930.
