- Watts Hospital was originally founded in 1895 with the philanthropic mission of free health care to all citizens. It was expanded and rebuilt, reopening in 1909. The hospital was so highly regarded that in 1922 James B. Duke, Governor Cameron Morrison and other proposed to create the state's first four-year medical college, Duke University, to educate students in conjunction with clinical services provided at Watts Hospital.
