The students are enrolled in a cooperative program between Durham city schools, State Vocational Department and Duke Hospital where they are trained to become licensed practical nurses. After three months of instruction at Hillside High School in Durham, students spent nine months in classes and practical training at Duke Hospital. Upon completion of the course, students received certificates in practical nursing and became eligible for licensure as a practical nurse in North Carolina. The program was also known as the Durham-Duke School for Negroes.
