  • J. Deryl Hart and Dept. of Surgery surgical team in protective clothing operating on a patient under the Sterilamp, an ultraviolet light source hanging from the operating room ceiling. In 1936, Dr. J. Deryl Hart originated the use of ultraviolet radiation to control airborne infections in surgical operating rooms, a technique that became widely accepted across the country. This procedure dramatically reduced the number of infections and related deaths and won national acclaim in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
