Dear "Jonah",
I hope by now Bob Emmons is with you and we feel most awfully grateful to you for having made it possible for him to do this. I trust his vagueness as to plans has not made it inconvenient or troublesome for you in anyway. He has been through many

throes and agonies of mind since the war began and I trust will be satisfied now and put some good common sense into his head. He is imbued with all kinds of modern and rotten Socialistic views that will not be of much use to him in the future. Thank you so much for all you have done. Am so wondering what you are doing at St. Nazaire I am sending this to the old address knowing it will be forwarded if you have gone permanently. Sir William & I are down at the Sea for a rest and little change.

I think we both needed it badly. This is a lovely spot in South Devon & it is hard to realize about the War here - Dear old Oxford is busier[?] than here - such incoming[?] number of men training & flying. The Hospitals packed - The Randolph Assembly Room is being used now. Briscoe has been turned into a ward for pensioners - most Oxfordshire men I believe who will be sent to their homes when fit. Dr. Futcher has [poor?] house. He had a splendid six months at the Canadian

[4]
Hospital at Orpington - I fancy Baltimore will be glad to get him back - it seems almost bereft of doctors. We are terribly ortohpaedic in Oxford - I dare say. You know Robert Johnson at the Hopkins, he has been in Oxford since Sept and is doing splendid [sic] work for the orthopaedics. I wish we knew about you all. It is very hard to get news from the American front, although we see so many men who have been over on major missions - I am waiting impatiently for you leave - I think you should get English leave on account of your [Deusi?] responsibilitat [sic], Sir William joins in all

messages - & to your wife as well affcly
