- This letter dated September 30, 1966 from Dr. Bowers, President of the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation, to Dr. William Anlyan, Dean, School of Medicine at Duke University, states that the Board of Directors of the Foundation at its September 23, 1966 meeting "voted to make a grant in the amount of $90,000 to Duke University School of Medicine for the development of a program to train physicians Assistants." The funds would be allocated in installments of $30,000 per annum for three years. Dr. Anlyan responds on October 3, 1966 expressing his pleasure in the award.
