Description
  • Early article with photographs of Duke University Physician's Assistant students in training that appeared in 1970 issue of Blue Cross News, published by North Carolina Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Inc. The article begins "Working with physicians in rural communities, urban practices, and medical complexes, the physician's assistant is a unique brand of medicine man, fully equipped with the technical skills needed to extend health care services to a greater number of people." The need for PAs is stated and a brief description of the curriculum and role is provided in the article. Dr. Robert Howard states that "PAs are not licensed, in fact, we oppose licensing because such a procedure could result in further fragmentation and independent practice which would defeat the purpose of the program."
