Description
  • The American Medical Association placed this advertisement entitled "We want to place this man in the hospital" in Life Magazine and newspapers to recruit former military medics (military corpsmen) into the physician assistant profession to help with "a shortage of doctors" and to inform the general public about the growing use of physician assistants in clinical settings. The advertisement includes a photograph of a young African-American male who had served as a military corpsmen in Vietnam washing the windshield of a car in a service station. The text accompanying the picture states that " back in civilian life, he's pumping gas. Nothing wrong with that, of course. Except for the terrible waste of his training."
