Description
  • A manuscript written by Dr. Eugene A. Stead, Jr. in 1969 and submitted to Dr. Thomas Kinney, Director of Medical Education at Duke University, describing his philosophy about the undergraduate and graduate education of physicians and their newest team member, physician assistants. The PA was to be "the top sergeant for the doctor." He contrasts the traditional way doctors are educated to the non-traditional way that PAs are to be educated. Dr. Stead discusses the need for the "dependent" relationship of the PA to doctor, but believes that PAs eventually can evolve into a doctor as they become more independent (autonomous) decision makers. He concludes that Duke University production of PAs is "its first move to give the practicing doctor the opportunity to build a more flexible clinical support system."
