- Summary minutes of a crucial meeting between representatives of the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Physicians' Associates at the AMA building in Chicago, IL, August 29, 1972. Mr. T. R. Godkins (AAPA President), Dr. Alfred Sadler (President, American Registry of Physician's Associates) and Mr. W. D. Stanhope (AAPA secretary) represented the emerging PA professional organizations. Items discussed included brief history of AAPA; attempts to register PAs but difficulty in deciding just how "inclusive" the Registry should be; AAPA interest in developing continuing education program for graduate PAs; and request that AMA formally recognize the Academy and give the AAPA representation on the Joint Review Committee for accreditation of PA programs. The AMA expressed concerns about: (1) use of the term Associates and recent AMA House of Delegates action opposed to that term; (2) how exclusive the AAPA seemed to be (no Medex, specialty graduates, etc.); (3) need to merge with American College of Physician's Assistants located in Cincinnati, OH). In summary, the AMA representatives stated that it was going to be difficult to formally recognize and grant representation on the Joint Review Committee to any organization with an elitist membership base and requested that the AAPA consider expanding its membership to include students enrolled in and graduates of AMA approved programs and PAs who successfully passed the NBME examination.
