  • News release by the National Board of Medical Examiners on August 6, 1972 announcing need to "determine the best way of developing nationally valid certifying examinations that will ensure the orderly development of the concept of the assistant to the primary care physician." A special study group is charged with defining the functions of the PA, study and analyze training programs eligibility for certification, research new testing methodology, administer the examination and assure continuing competence of PAs following certification.
