- The purpose of this workbook was "to establish a frame of reference for evaluation of emerging health occupations (loosely categorized as 'physician's assistants' within the format of Guidelines for Development of New Health Occupations." The committee accumulated documents from seventeen "programs" and cut and pasted relevant statements to match topics in the Guidelines. The committee looked at job descriptions, limitations of functions, medical supervision, employment settings, existing occupations now performing service, necessity for emerging occupation, projected numbers to be employed, impact on existing occupations, program sponsor, acceptance of new occupation, salary range, employment opportunities, geographic distribution, professional certification-liability and provision for mobility. The committee did not consider educational criteria and omitted this from the workbook.
