- These are minutes of an Ad Hoc Committee established by Dr. William Anlyan, Dean of the Duke University Medical School, to review and make recommendations for the Physician's Assistant Program being developed at the Medical Center. The Committee met on February 16, April 13, March 2, March 16 and March 30, 1966. Dr. Eugene Stead, Jr. chaired the committee and Mr. James C. Mau, Department of Medicine Administrator, served as the Committee's Secretary. During the first meeting, Dr. Anlyan provides the committee's charge. Following meetings reviewed the program that was started in October 1965, and discussed topics ranging from the legal implications of the physician's assistant, possible sources of funding, to review of other allied health training programs being conducted at the Medical Center. It was mentioned that Look Magazine wanted to do a feature article about the PA Program and that the Macy and Kellogg Foundation had shown some interest in possibly funding the program. The effectiveness of PAs would depend upon: (1) physician's acceptance, (2) society's acceptance, and (3) the PA's competence.
