- Report released by the AMA's Council on Health Manpower to update State Medical Societies and State Medical Licensing Authorities on progress "in developing a national program of certification, based on proficiency testing, for the assistant to the primary care physician." The report provides background on meetings held and decisions made to develop the examination in collaboration with the National Board of Medical Examiners. In June, 1972 a 19-member special Study Committee for the Evaluation of Physician's Assistants was established under the NBME, to begin development of the certification examination. Another advisory group was formed to advise the AMA on such related issues as "terminology, continuing competence, relationships with physician's assistant organizations, and prerequisites (eligibility) for the certification examination." The exam was to be developed and administered before the end of 1973.
