- Portrait of Thomas Sydenham. In the foreground are a caduceus, a jar, a book, and other objects. Painted by P. Lely and engraved by J. Houbraken. Text: "In the possession of John Sydenham, Esqr." Attached note indicates that Sydenham was famous for his successful cooling treatment of smallpox and his use of Peruvian bark for treatment of quartan agues. He is regarded as the English Hippocrates.
